Our Timeless Nature Rotation

 March 16th, 2025

At the beginning of this year, shortly after returning to China, I traveled to Guangdong Province with a close friend. A casual day took us from Zhuhai to Zhongshan, then further north to Shunde—driven by cravings for double-skim milk and raw fish salad. Guangdong’s perpetual spring-like climate allowed us to dress lightly even in early January, its streets lined with lush trees that stood in stark contrast to the landscapes of East China.

While gazing absently at the passing scenery from a taxi in Zhongshan, a question suddenly surfaced in my mind: What kind of beauty is truly eternal?

I’ve always harbored endless critiques of urban renewal projects—filled-in clogged rivers reek of bureaucratic laziness; whitewashed weathered walls assault aesthetic sensibilities; cookie-cutter residential buildings exude monotony. Even those initially charming boutiques or buildings that catch my eye eventually lose their luster over time.

As the taxi approached the light rail station under subtly shifting skies, I recalled a recent video about Monet which referred to his serial painting technique. To capture fleeting light and shadow, Monet would set up multiple easels outdoors simultaneously, documenting how light transformed across different times and weather conditions.

Spring and summer in London bring agreeable weather with extended daylight, where sunsets at 8–9 PM often gift breathtaking skies. I used to keep my camera on the dining table near the balcony, ready to dash out and seize those sublime moments.

This made me realize: I never tire of nature’s transient beauty—the dance of light throughout a single day, the cyclical rhythm of seasons throughout a full year.

We yearn for spring blossoms during winter’s chill, anticipate heavy snowfall amid summer’s heat.

The changing seasons cultivate nostalgia for what has just passed and excitement for what’s to come. To me, eternal beauty seems to reside in nature’s cyclical patterns. Yet these cycles may drift away from our lands due to climate change, vanishing entirely after the next glacial epoch. We are fortunate enough, as tiny beings in the cosmic timeline, to experience this fleeting wonder within our brief lifetimes.

Having not lived permanently in Wenzhou since 2009, I have missed springs there for 15 years. With free time allowed in this spring, I’m eager to return and witness its vernal rebirth!
